Revit Tip - Tagging and Noting 3D Views

Here is a simple little trick that I know will come in handy for many of you.  Did you know that you can tag, note, and dimension elements in a 3D view?  Think about how beneficial it would be to see your model in 3D and see the wall tags, door tags, keyontes, etc...

Notice in the image above you can see a door tag, a text note, and a curtain-wall tag...

Continue reading to find out how to start tagging and making 3D views with details....

The process of tagging elements in a 3D view is the exact same as the process of tagging elements in a 2D view with one caveat... The view has to be locked... If your 3D view is not locked, Revit will let you know with this lovely little warning:

So, how do you lock a 3D view?  Simple... Create the 3D view you would like to annotate.  Orient the view to your liking.  Once you have oriented, zoomed, and panned to your delight, lock the view using a simple little button at the bottom of your screen:

Once clicked, select "Save Orientation and Lock View".  Give the view orientation a name that makes sense.  This is important because you can always restore the orientation when you mess it up... Which we ALL do.

Now that you view is locked, feel free to start tagging away!  Simply click over to the Annotate tab and use your Tags as normal.

A few things to keep in mind:

The following tag types are not allowed in a 3D view:
- Material tags
- Area and room tags
- Space tags

Also, by default, the leader for tags in a 3D view is set to Free End on the Options Bar. This setting is preferred for elements that may require adjustments to 3D tags, such as walls.

Cheers and keep tagging!
